My favorite part of the Bleach manga has always been those awesome artsy splash page at the beginning of each chapter, with the cool poses and the funky clothes and the mangaka visibly going DUH-HAW I DRAW WHATEVER I WANT HERE WHEE! So when I was moved to the Bleach spirit, what should spring to mind but an artsy-fartsy fashion-forward splash page complete with nifty-cool poses? And then I drew it, and it came out pretty well. I am so enamored of long-leggity Ishida with the archer's bracers that I could just die, even though Ichigo is somewhat more competently drawn. I meant to color it, too. I mean, I really tried. I laid down flat colors and everything. But it never looked right. The only way this picture ever looked right was when I turned off all the color layers and left it as clean linework. I tried laying down grays. I tried laying down screentone. Nothing looked right except clean, empty linework on a background of flat colors. So, hey, I went with it. When this picture was in its progress stages I nicknamed it 'The Adventures of EMO FAG I mean GOTH FAG and OI BOI in Flatland'. I still stand by that statement. |
