| Ficbit Challenge 2, Number 14: Matantei Loki Ragnarok, Yamino
===== |
| Yamino loved his computer with the same sort of gentle, loyal, accepting
love that he showered on his family, the house, his friends, nifty gadgets,
and mail-order catalogs. Which was kind of sad, really, because he'd also
managed to kill at least two computers before he got his current one, a
non-threatening green and white abstract shape with gently rounded edges
that he had promptly nicknamed 'Wasabi'. (Yamino wasn't partial to lime,
generally, except in sorbet, and that only in the summer.)
Simply put, the problem was that Yamino became an idiot when you put him in front of a keyboard. However, he was now armed with an extremely aggressive antivirus program set to 'Nuclear Winter' and detailed instructions on what not to do with his email (he had an awful tendency to trustingly open attachments and was always a little too interested in spamvertising) and he therefore might be able to keep this computer alive for more than a few months. He hoped so. Because Yamino loved his computer. Every night after Loki went to bed and the house had been put in order for the night Yamino retreated to his own room and marveled at how he could buy anything--anything--by asking the little Googlebox for it. At most he would have to inquire if they could ship their wares to Japan, and if they wouldn't, someone else would, and if no one would, throwing money at them usually solved the problem anyway. And money he had in abundance, and a special credit card just for this purpose, and the packages trickled in every afternoon and Yamino gleefully signed for them. The problem came, as it inevitably must, when Yamino discovered eBay and Yahoo!Japan Auctions. Somehow (possibly because, when it came to computers, he was an idiot) Yamino attracted scam artists and deadbeats as if he were magnetized for them. Yamino, eternally patient, faithfully reported each one, and Yamino, eternally gullible, kept bidding. And the frauds kept racking up. Still, everyone has their limits. Yamino asking for the afternoon off was unusual enough to merit a pause and a thoughtful stare from Loki, but also unusual enough that Loki felt obligated to let him go. On the other hand, Yamino returning, humming, with an armload of packages was not unusual in the slightest--except that they were wet. "Yamino-kun?" Loki asked dubiously, turning a wet box over and over in his hands. "Why are these wet?" "I haven't the faintest idea, Loki-sama," Yamino assured him, neatly disposing of a dripping shopping bag. Loki looked thoughtfully out at the perfectly clear summer sky. "I see, Yamino-kun." |
