| Ogata's hands paused for just a brief second before he went back to
plucking his white stones off the board. "You're what, Touya-sensei?"
"Going to be a father, apparently," Touya said, letting the last handful of black stones pour into his bowl. "Akiko told me this morning." "Mm." Ogata did likewise, then sat back on his heels and lit himself a cigarette. Flames danced in the lenses of his glasses for a moment. "I suppose congratulations are in order," he said around the filter of his cigarette, dropping his lighter back into his pocket and looking away. Touya placed the bowl of black stones back onto the goban. "It would seem so." Ogata's eyes flicked back to his teacher's. "... you don't sound happy, Touya-sensei," he said, tilting his head slightly. "Hm?" Touya blinked back at him, his eyes as unreadable as ever. "Ah. It's not that." "No?" Leaving his cigarette caught between his teeth, Ogata put the white stones onto the board and picked up the black ones, moving them to sit by his knee. "Are you certain?" "Yes." Touya said it with no hesitation whatsoever, picking up the white stones in his turn. "It's time. I'll enjoy having a child, I think. I hope to have a son. Someone to pass my go on to at last." At that Ogata's teeth closed hard on the filter of his cigarette, and the coal fell off, dropping into his lap to burn a small brown hole in his white pants. Once the fuss was over he blamed it on poorly-packed tobacco, and Touya looked at him with those absolutely unreadable eyes and blandly agreed. |
