Twenty-Eight -
|
| It had been a long day. Together they'd successfully defended their
bit of beach from the combined onslaught of Tidus and Selphie and
Wakka, despite Riku breaking not one but two stick-swords and Sora falling
down and skinning both knees. Then, when that had gotten old, they'd turned
on each other and fought up one side of the island and down the other,
until their arms ached from fighting and their throats hurt from yelling,
and then Sora had hit Riku's fingers where they gripped his stick and Riku
had been forced to drop the stick and chase a yelling Sora down and rub
sand into his hair.
So, all right, it had been a day much like every other day that had come before it, and much like every other day that was likely to come afterwards. And after all that, much like they did every evening after dinner, Sora and Riku retreated to the little spit of sand that stuck out from the island and threw themselves down on it, laying with the tops of their heads touching and watching the light fade from the sky. "First star!" they yelled simultaneously, both pointing at the pinpoint of light in the sky, and then as fast as they could they both yelled "Star-light-star-bright first-star-I-see-tonight I-wish-I-may I-wish-I-might have-the-wish-I-wish-tonight!" They finished at the exact same moment, which meant, of course, that whoever made their silent wish harder would have their wish come true. Sora clasped both hands on his chest and screwed his face up in an expression of concentration, eyes squeezed shut, mouth twisted up. Riku did the same, and as hard as he could he thought I wish that something different would happen, I'm so sick of every day being the exact same thing, I want something new to happen, I want to see the world-- "Done!" Sora announced proudly, and let his hands drop. Riku's own eyes flew open. "... so what'd you wish for?" he asked innocently, reaching up idly with one hand to 'catch' the star. "I'm not telling!" Sora sounded shocked. "If you tell your wish doesn't come true!" "Aw," Riku said. "It's just us. It doesn't count if it's just us." Sora considered this logic and eventually accepted it. "I wished that every day could be just like this," he said, and he grinned up at the sky and stuck both hands behind his head. "I don't want things to ever change. It's so great..." "Oh," Riku said, numbly. He let go of the star he'd caught and let his hand fall again. "Yeah," Sora said, oblivious. "So what did you wish for, Riku?" "Huh? Oh." Riku reached up blindly over his head and tweaked Sora's nose, making his friend yelp. "I'm not going to tell, because if I tell you my wish won't come true!" "What? But you said--" Sora scrambled to sit up, whipping around to face his friend. "Hey! No fair! You made me jinx my wish on purpose!" "Victory!" Riku said, laughing, and then Sora pounced on him and they wrestled in the sand until every star in the sky was there to see it. |
