"Riskbreaker," Montblanc corrected him. "It's an old Valendian knighthood title. Predates the clan system, actually!"

"Wow," Vaan said. He rolled his certificate back up and twisted around to stow it in his beltpouch. "So what's it mean?"

"Riskbreakers were knights who were specifically trained to enter and defuse high-risk situations," Montblanc said. There was a pause, a brief one, which Vaan was too preoccupied to notice, and then Montblanc added, "There's actually a uniform associated with the title, if you're interested..."

"A uniform?" Vaan said, his head snapping up. "Really?"

"Oh, yes," said Montblanc, nodding so hard that his pompom swayed behind him. "Very, er, historical. The Valendian design hasn't changed in a thousand years..."

Vaan stopped to consider this. "Is it good armor?"

"Very light," Montblanc assured him. "Easy to move about in, won't bind your limbs at all."

"Okay," Vaan said, smiling hopefully. "I'll take it."

"Excellent!" Montblanc said, clapping his paws together. "Ma'kenroh, have you got the chest key handy? I'll just be needing the Riskbreaker box..."

The box was quickly produced, and Montblanc handed it to Vaan with a deep bow. "Just remember that the white piece goes on first, underneath everything else, and the leather piece goes on on top of it," he said, his pompom twitching once. "Otherwise it'll chafe."

"Got it," Vaan said, nodding furiously and clutching the box. "Thanks, Montblanc. I owe you."

"Nonsense," Montblanc said, waving that away. "And congratulations on making Riskbreaker, Vaan."

The moogle had to stuff one paw in his mouth to keep from laughing before the clan-hall door swung shut behind Vaan. "If anyone needs me, I'm indisposed," he told Ma'kenroh, and hopped out the window, flying as fast as his little wings could take him for the roof of the Sandsea and his friends.

They weren't going to believe this.
